St. Albert Trustee Elected as Provincial Catholic Education Leader

The Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association (ACSTA) Board of Directors held an election this week to replace resigning Board Chair, Adriana LaGrange, who has held the position for the past 2 1/2 years. The ACSTA Board of Directors are delighted to announce that Serena Shaw, Board Chair with Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, has been elected as the new president of the organization providing a seamless transition.

Serena Shaw has been an active and supportive Director on the ACSTA board for the past three years. She has served as Chair for the Advocacy Committee and played an active role in the development of the ACSTA’s Strategic Plan. Shaw is well versed and prepared to engage the government, stakeholders and educational partners. She is an advocate for Catholic education and a faith filled leader committed to her family and her faith stating, “I’m honoured to take on this leadership position; I know it is a pivotal point in Catholic education where our voice, advocacy and leadership will make a difference.”   As a strong advocate for collaboration Shaw noted, “I’m looking forward to working with the Bishops, Superintendents, Alberta School Boards Association and the Ministry of Education to further the success of Catholic education across the province.”

The Board would like to extend a special thanks to current President, Adriana LaGrange, who will be officially resigning as of June 10th to pursue other endeavors. LaGrange led the organization with poise, commitment and determination in a time of increasing pressure on Catholic education.  Catholic education leadership has been a vocation and her desire to bring Christ to students across Alberta, Yukon, and Northwest Territories has been paramount. She governed with compassion, love, and courage, and her leadership guided the association through legislative changes by working effectively with the Minister, stakeholder associations and the Bishops. “We wish her well in her new endeavors,” commented Executive Director, Dean Sarnecki.

The Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association represents Catholic trustees in Alberta, Northwest Territories and Yukon to provide a unified voice for spiritual and political leadership in support of publicly-funded Catholic education.
